Taijul Islam - Success is Triumph of a Classical Hero
Unlike
the typical modern-day sports icon, Taijul Islam thrives in the shadows. He
believes in going about his work silently, day in and day out, without
demanding the center of attention. Yet today, he sits comfortably at the very
top of his country’s Test wicket-taking charts. In the 25-year history of
Bangladesh Test cricket, no bowler has taken more wickets than the quiet boy
from Natore—proving beyond doubt that hard work, consistency, perseverance, and
a high-quality work ethic have no replacement.
Mohammad
Abbas, Thilan Samaraweera, Mominul Haque, and Taijul Islam share a unique bond
that goes far beyond the fact that they are all Asian cricketers. Each of them
had to fight relentlessly for their place in the side. They rarely enjoyed the
blinding glare of the limelight, often overshadowed by bigger stars in their
respective teams. Yet, each became absolutely crucial to their team’s historic
successes. This article explores the remarkable journey of Taijul Islam,
currently Bangladesh’s undisputed number one Test bowler.
Born in
Natore, within the Rajshahi Division, Taijul grew up in a family facing severe
economic hardships. As the only son among three children, a profound sense of
responsibility was thrust upon him from an early age. This maturity became
evident not just in his personal life, but throughout his professional career. Despite
the hardships, cricket always held a magnetic attraction for him. During the
1990s and early 2000s, Natore was a heavily agricultural area, with over 70% of
the working population relying on farming. Incomes were low, and luxuries were
incredibly rare. Television sets were a novelty, available only in a handful of
wealthy homes. Taijul and his friends, however, would always find a way to
crowd around a screen to follow cricket matches.
He was
just 13 years old when Bangladesh registered their historic, long-awaited
maiden Test victory against Zimbabwe in January 2005. That single win ignited a
spark inside him, making it crystal clear in his mind that he, too, would one
day play Test cricket for Bangladesh. After starting his competitive journey in
local Natore leagues, Taijul climbed through the ranks to represent the
Bangladesh U-13 team, later joining the Mirpur Boys Club in 2009. His true
breakthrough arrived during the 2013-14 domestic season, where he ripped
through batting lineups to claim 55 wickets in the National Cricket League.
This blockbuster performance earned him his maiden international call-up for
the away series against the West Indies.

| Taijul has been the architect of many memorable Test wins |
Taijul
made an immediate impression, capturing a five-wicket haul on his Test debut.
Just a month later, he produced a stunning display of left-arm orthodox spin,
bamboozling Zimbabwe with incredible figures of 8 for 39. His clinical exploits
against heavyweights like India, South Africa, and Pakistan in 2015 firmly
established him as a premier Test match specialist. By 2016, his lethal spells
were vital in helping Bangladesh secure their historic first-ever Test victory
against England. The following year, he played an exceptional supporting role
alongside Shakib Al Hasan, dismantling the opposition to register a landmark
maiden Test win over Australia.
The year
2018 saw Taijul reach new heights, hoarding 43 wickets in just 7 Tests at a
phenomenal average of 22.97. However, the subsequent years tested his patience.
Between 2019 and 2020, Bangladesh played only 7 Tests in total. As a red-ball
specialist, it was incredibly difficult to maintain rhythm with such lengthy
gaps. While he was given sporadic opportunities in the limited-overs formats,
he couldn't leave a noticeable mark. But when world cricket fully resumed in
2021, Taijul took over the mantle as the senior spinner, and he has not looked
back since. Even when the team struggled, Taijul stood tall.
In 2021,
though Bangladesh suffered heavy 0-2 home series defeats against both the West
Indies and Pakistan, Taijul performed exceptionally well, taking 22 wickets
across those 4 Test matches. The next year, he bagged 9 wickets on challenging
South African tracks, fighting a lonely battle even as Bangladesh collapsed to
embarrassing defeats. Redemption arrived in 2023 when he spearheaded a
remarkable victory against New Zealand on a spinning track in Sylhet. Taijul
walked away with the Man of the Match award after a masterclass performance
that yielded 10 wickets. He carried that red-hot form into a subsequent series
against South Africa, taking 13 wickets in 2 Tests, though he unfortunately
ended up on the losing side once more. His crowning achievement, however, came
during a historic series against Pakistan, where he bagged 13 wickets at a
staggering average of 19.61. Thanks to an incredible, unified team effort,
Bangladesh swept the series 2-0 on foreign soil.
In
November 2025, during a Test match against Ireland, Taijul etched his name into
eternity. By dismissing his targets with surgical precision, he surpassed the
legendary Shakib Al Hasan to become Bangladesh’s highest-ever Test
wicket-taker. Today, he stands alone at the apex of his country’s bowling
history, with 271 wickets in 61 matches.

It is a
beautiful irony that an athlete who was never marketed as a mainstream
superstar—often labeled a mere journeyman—ultimately toppled the giants to become
his nation's most successful bowler. Taijul’s career is the perfect epitome of
why consistent hard work, combined with the continuous upgrading of one's
skills, will always triumph over sporadic genius.
Despite
his monumental achievements, Taijul remains deeply grounded, focused entirely
on contributing to his team's future success. The Bangladesh Test squad has
evolved beautifully, tasting historic overseas success over the last 24 months,
highlighted by stellar series performances in Pakistan and Australia. For a
pure Test specialist, maintaining a competitive rhythm during long layoffs
remains a daunting challenge, yet the team continuously expects him to deliver
as their undisputed leader.
Ultimately,
Taijul Islam’s journey is a profound reminder that greatness does not always
arrive with a roar; sometimes, it builds in absolute silence. For a boy who
once searched for a television screen in the rural farmlands of Natore, simply
to glimpse his country’s first Test victory, standing at the absolute peak of
Bangladesh’s Test history is nothing short of poetic. He was never handed the
crown of a superstar, nor did he ever seek the blinding glare of the spotlight.
Instead, he chose the grueling, thankless path of the ultimate
workhorse—bowling his heart out, over after over, year after year.
By
outlasting the flashier icons and toppling the greatest records, Taijul has
proven that quiet persistence, unwavering loyalty to the craft, and an
unbreakable spirit can conquer the grandest summits. He remains the grounded
soul of Bangladesh cricket, a classical hero whose legacy is written not in
fleeting fame, but in the timeless sweat and grit of a true champion.
