the Top 10
10.
Wasim Akram – 10-0-49-3 vs England,
Final, 25th March 1992, 1992, World Cup - There
is reason why this spell is rated so highly, in spite of a certain left arm
seamer picking only three wickets in the match.
The spell bowled by legendry Wasim Akram changed the course of the final
of the 1992 World Cup. Chasing Pakistan’s 249, the match was evenly poised with
England 141-4 in 34.4 overs, requiring another 109 to win off 92 deliveries. It
was the moment when two golden deliveries from Wasim ripped the heart out of
England’s chase. Going round the wicket, he knocked out Allan Lamb and Chris Lewis
off consecutive deliveries to ensure Pakistan wins its maiden world cup.
Wasim Akram was at his best in 1992 World Cup Final |
9. Glenn McGrath – 8.4-3-14-5 vs West Indies, 30th
May 1999, 1999 World Cup- It was
Glenn McGrath special that put the Australian campaign on track in 1999 World
Cup. He was at his best when Australia needed its pace spearhead the most. With
a breathtaking spell of 14-5, he broke the West Indian batting and cleared
Australia’s passage to super six. The ball on which he knocked Brian Lara was a
special one, it jagged from the middle to knock the top of the off stump.
8.
Shane Bond – 10-2-23-6 vs Australia, 11th March 2003- 2003 World Cup
– One of the best of his generation, Shane Bond might
not have achieved what his talent beckoned but in 2003 World Cup, he bowled one
of the most fearsome spells against Australia, who were on top of their game.
His 23-6 might not have sealed the game for Kiwis but he bowled a spell that is
still remembered after 20 years.
7. Mitchell Starc – 9-0-28-6 vs. New Zealand, 28th
February 2015, 2015 World Cup - Another performance to
remember this time from an all time great ODI bowler from Australia Mitchell
Starc who ensured that New Zealand have to struggle even for a small score on
their own home turf. In the process he took 28-6 but was unable to dislodge a
determined Kane Williamson who took his side to remarkable victory.
6. Winston Davis – 10.3-0-51-7 vs. Australia, 11-12th
June 1983, 1983 World Cup- One of
the best spells in history of World Cup, Winston Davis wrecked havoc on
Australia in the group game of 1983 World Cup with figures of 51-7, which was
the best for long time in ODI Cricket.
5. Garry Gilmour – 12-6-14-6 vs. England, 18th
June 1975, 1975 World Cup - A top class bowling spell from another Australian pacer finds place in
top spell of the World Cup. On 18th June 1975, Gilmour blew off
England in what were seaming conditions for just 94. While host England were
left stunned but fought back to reduce Australia to 39-6, before Gilmour again
recued the team, scoring 28 off 28 balls.
Garry Gilmour's all round performance ensured a thrilling win for Australia |
4. Tim Southee – 9-0-33-7 vs. England, 20th
February 2015, 2015 World Cup - One of the best swing bowlers of his time, Tim Southee made a mark in
home world cup in 2015. He led the attack with lot of energy. Against England
he was at his best, picking 7 wickets for 33 runs in what is still the best
bowling figure for a Kiwi bowler in ODI Cricket.
3. Andrew Bichel – 10-0-20-7 vs. England, 2nd
March 2003, 2003 World Cup - Australian bowler Andrew Bichel had memorable outing against England in
2003 World Cup. He picked 7-20 while bowling which is one of the best figures
in the International cricket. Bichel later on helped Australia to win, after
they were tottering at 135-8, chasing 204.
2. Shane Warne- 10-4-29-4 vs. South Africa,
Semifinal, 17th June 1999, 1999 World Cup –One of the finest spells in history of World Cup,
delivered by spin ace, Shane Warne. The stage was set up perfectly for Warne,
the box office hero who weaved the magic on South Africans looking all set to
reach their first final. Even though
Warne picked 29-4 but his impact and the occasion means it is one of the top
spells of all time.
1. Shane Warne -9-0-36-4 vs. West Indies, Semifinal,
14th March 1996, 1996 World Cup-Another Warne Special, this time in 1996 World Cup, Warne pulled
the rug from under the feet of West Indies who looked almost certain to nail
down the target of 207 when they were 165-2 but it was the moment when Warne
started to weave the magic and ensured Australia staged a memorable comeback.
It itched the semifinal of 1996 World Cup at Mohali in the annals of world cup
history.
My personal favourite - Paul Strang 5-21 vs Kenya at Patna on 27th February 1996 |
