It was an
evening after Kolkata test in 2005 when Younis Khan was told by a board
official that his career was finished. Humiliated and insulted Younis responded
with a innings of his lifetime, a massive double hundred against India in
Bangalore registering one of Pakistan’s greatest wins. Therefore it was no
surprise when he became first Pakistani cricketer to score 10,000 Test runs
after days of murmurs of U –Turn about his retirement.
Younis had lived all his life
fighting against the odds and nothing has come to him easily. Be it his debut,
the captaincy, quitting the captaincy, the landmarks. But every time when he
seemed down and out, he had bounced back with much rigour. This is the reason
it was no surprise when he reached the landmark no other Pakistani had reached
ever in their history. The historic moment came minutes after tea when he swept
Roston Chase becoming the 13th batsman to join 10,000 Club. As usual
Younis celebrated with a smile which seemed to have become his trademark. His
achievement was acknowledged by a sparse crowd present at Sabina Park but it
doesn’t reduces the value of his achievement which Younis have been eyeing
since he became the highest Pakistani run getter in test cricket 18 months back
breaking the legendry Javed Miandad’s record. All this have come a day after
Younis clarified that he will retire after the test series against West Indies
and people shouldn’t doubt his credentials.
